When it rains it pours...

Although I'm still mourning for Ranger, life does go on. Thanks to those of you who've emailed me. I really appreciate your support. We did the best we could for him, but sometimes that's just not enough.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Whisky's (yes, it's really spelled that way) surgery hasn't been healing as nicely as I'd have liked. I've been watching it and taking him for his regular exercise (the boy is learning to lunge very nicely) and hosing him off, but the swelling...

Remembrance

I go on, day to day, doing the things that need to be done. Today was no exception, but there was a sorrow to it and a worry to it that is fortunately rare.

This morning began with an update on Ranger. He was holding his own this morning, which was good enough news to get me through the next few hours. Poor Melissa, holding down the fort at her place having spent a near sleepless night taking care of him at her place. He was there for training and she'd had him for the duration of...

It's up to him...

If you've followed along, you know that Ranger has had a rough time. Seems like everything that could happen has happened to this guy. He really doesn't deserve the life he's had so far -- he deserves something better. Unfortunately today started well, but didn't end so well.

First off, we had the lab tests back and Ranger is NOT a strangles carrier. A happy surprise, and it seemed as though Ranger's luck was finally changing. He actually has s. zooepidemicus which isn't contagious....

Standardbred Racing Careers

I think I've written about the latest two P.E.R.N. arrivals, Susie and Whisky. Susie is out with the other Standardbred mares, and Whisky is doing very well post-surgery. He is really the nicest guy. He's one of those pocket horses that likes to be and do whatever you want to do and makes no fuss about it at all. Whisky is quite a treat to work with!

Today I was doing a few things and thought I'd go look up their racing records. I've looked up records before but I guess I didn't...

Whiskey

I got a call last week from one of the trainers at the track. She had a 4 year old stallion that needed to find a new home QUICK! I said OK, but he had to make a trip to the vet's before he arrived here. We arranged for the trainer to drop him off at the vet's and I'd pick him up from there and bring him home after the deed was done.

I called the vet in the afternoon to see if he was ready and yes he was. I also heard so many wonderful things about him. Pretty nice when the vet...

Susie

Susie is a recent addition. She's a lovely dappled bay Standardbred mare that was quite a winner at the track. She won over $150,000.

I met Susie during my visit to the track a few weeks ago, and picked her up the next day. She settled in nicely and was a pleasure to be with. Susie had some swelling on her right fetlock so I gave her some time to recover and she stayed in one of the quarantine pens. They're fairly large and have a nice shelter for shade and protection from rain --...

Can anybody be this unlucky?

Today was another big day for Ranger. Yes, it was the day he was going to get scoped and we were going to put an end to the worries that he was a strangles carrier. Well, if you know Ranger you know it's just not likely that things were going to go smoothly! Ranger has turned out to be a very nice boy to work with, but there always seems to be a complication.

I don't know if you've ever seen a horse scoped. It's a fascinating thing to watch and this time was no exception....

Back from vacation

Had a great trip. Humboldt Redwoods is a lovely park.

Here's the first installment of Velour's vacation documentary. Unfortunately she didn't get the tail eating episode on film. That would have been something. One night she has a tail, the next morning all gone! Sometimes you just can be way too friendly with your neighbors!

In a glutted market where some horses can be had for as little as $2, auctioneer Tim Jennings is trying to convince horse owners it's still a good time to sell their animals.

"We're telling people to compare how much they're spending on the horse with the potential sale price," said Jennings, president and director of marketing for Professional Auction Sales, Inc., a consignment...
