About Performance Equine Rescue Network!

Performance Equine Rescue Network (P.E.R.N.) began as an accident that became a mission. In 2004, chairman and president, Gloria Pearson, was searching for two horses she could ride to realize a personal dream; ride the Pacific Crest Trail. After three promising horses failed vet checks, a friend suggested she adopt a couple of PMU foals, and raise them to be her Pacific Crest Trail horses. It wasn’t a practical idea since it would take years to raise and train the foals, but Gloria began looking at various web sites offering PMU foals. She ran across a particular site that had over 80 horses offered, both mares and foals, and only a couple of weeks left before they would all be sent to slaughter.

Gloria was stunned and felt she had to do something. She initially planned to purchase two horses in hopes they would be sound and healthy, and planned to train them and find them new homes if they weren’t the right horses for her. That was the launch of Performance Equine Rescue Network (P.E.R.N.).

Although she had limited facilities, Gloria bought eight (potentially in foal) mares, and aided in finding homes for more than 70 other horses. She rallied support and got donations. One wonderful supporter offered to fund no-cost loans and to subsidize hauling if Gloria would guarantee the $14,000 worth of loans. Overwhelmed at the risk, but feeling that she had to do something, Gloria agreed. All of the loans were repaid by the individual adopters.

After this surprising beginning Gloria applied for non-profit status to continue the work already begun. Since then, P.E.R.N. has rescued and placed over 70 additional horses, and aided in the placement of many others. P.E.R.N. currently has many available horses looking for new homes.

Equine rescue organizations are not unusual, but P.E.R.N. is unique. We rescue horses we believe have a good future as pleasure or working horses, and then provide rehabilitation and/or training to prepare them for a new home. Our horses are offered for placement at all stages of training, but we try to place each horse with a partner that would make a good match in both experience and aptitude. Our goal is not to house horses for life, but to provide horses with potential an opportunity to find a great, life-long home.

P.E.R.N. always has horses available in a range of ages, sizes and breeds including registered and grade horses. Most of our horses are green or unstarted and unsuitable for beginners.

Performance Equine Rescue Network relies on donations and the sale of our horses to enable us to fund the rescue of new horses and provide care and training for horses at our facility. When looking for a new horse please consider one of our great horses!
